Sound Cards

A sound is a card inside your computer which allows it to produce sounds internal or external speakers.  Sound cards can be bought for as little as or as much as you want to spend.  However, if you want to immerse yourself in a surround sound environment or plan to start creating music of your own, it is worth paying extra for a higher quality piece kit.

If you are a movie buff you will need to look out for a Dolby Digital decoder to enable surround sound on movies audio.   For serious hardcore gamers, surround sound is one thing but 3D support is yet another set-up.  DirectSound 3D enables sound pan around the speakers which quite sound something.

For budding knob twiddlers in the midst of building a home studio, it will prove valuable to own a sound card as many as many analogue and digital connections as possible so that it works effectively with all your studio gear.  Grab some Audio Stream Input/output (ASIO) drivers for better performance in compatible software.  ASIO is a sound card driver providing high fidelity interface between a software application and a computer sound card.  PCI is the standard interface for sound cards, although USB devices are also available to meet most needs.
